Medication Collection Day
March 20, 2008
The Indiana
Pharmacists Alliance (IPA) partnered with the Indiana Poison Center,
Marsh Pharmacies, the Marion County Health Department,
Statewide Medical Services, and Clarian Health to hold a clean out
your medicine cabinet day on March 20th. This event was part of the
National Poison Prevention Week (NPPW) and was an opportunity for Indiana residents to
drop off and dispose of their unwanted or expired medications. Butler and
Purdue pharmacy students volunteered for the event at the Marion County
Health Department and Marsh pharmacy locations.

In 2007, the
Indiana Poison Center, Marion County Health Department, Indianapolis Safe Kids
and the Indiana Pharmacists Alliance (IPA), partnered to coordinate a special
event for NPPW. “Clean Out Your Medicine Cabinet Day” provided a way for the
general public to safely dispose of expired and unused medications. Statewide
Medical Services very graciously donated containers and incinerated
surrendered medication free of charge. Purdue and Butler Pharmacy students
volunteered for the event.
The 2008 event
was boosted by the presence of Marsh Pharmacy. Medications were once again
collected at the Marion County Health Department and the addition of 41 Marsh
pharmacies meant that more people were able to safely dispose of their unwanted
medication. Altogether, a staggering total of 600 pounds of medication was
collected at this year’s event.
